Alan M. Kraut

Alan M. Kraut is Professor of History at American University in Washington, DC and holds a faculty appointment at the United States University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He is a specialist in U.S. immigration and ethnic history, and in the history of American medicine and public health.
He chairs the Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation's History Advisory Committee and is a past President of the Immigration and Ethnic History Society. Dr. Kraut is President of the American Organization of Historians.
Dr. Kraut has been an historical consultant on documentaries related to immigration history and the history of medicine broadcast on PBS, BBC, and the History Channel. Most recently he was an adviser on the PBS documentary Forgotten Ellis Island, the Extraordinary Story of America's Immigrant Hospital (2009).
His books include Silent Travelers: Germs, Genes, and the "Immigrant Menace;" From Arrival to Incorporation, Migrants to the U.S. in a Global Era (co-editor); and Goldberger's War: The Life and Work of a Public Health Crusader.
