Immigration Data Matters: MPI and PRB Release Online Guide with Top Data Resources on Immigrants and Immigration at U.S., International Levels

WASHINGTON – The Migration Policy Institute and Population Reference Bureau today released an update to their popular online guide, which directs users to the most credible, useful data on immigrants and immigration in the United States and internationally.

The easy-to-use guide, Immigration Data Matters, links users directly to more than 220 U.S. and global data resources compiled by governmental and authoritative non-governmental sources. The data selections are designed to help the public quickly access statistics on the top immigration-related issues.

“At a time when immigration has become such a polarized topic in many countries, people who want to understand the effects of immigration on demographics, the economy, education and labor systems and society more broadly need to know where to find high-quality data,” said MPI President Andrew Selee.

The guide covers topics ranging from population stocks and flows to modes of entry, socio-demographic data on immigrants and their children, humanitarian and labor migration, enforcement statistics, public opinion, international students, development indicators, religious affiliation, citizenship and more. Beyond the U.S. section, the guide features data sources by world region, as well as for the European Union (and select countries in Europe) and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development countries.

“These are resources that we turn to again and again in our own work as researchers, so we hope everyone from policymakers and journalists to students of migration and engaged members of the general public will find them as relevant as we do,” said MPI Senior Policy Analyst Jeanne Batalova, the guide’s lead co-author.

The guide also offers tips on how to access more complex data sources, lists the frequency of updates and provides other resources, including a glossary of commonly used immigration terms.

First published in 2008, the Immigration Data Matters guide is just the latest data resource offered by MPI. The institute’s Migration Data Hub includes a trove of interactive tools, maps and charts with data generated by MPI as well as collected from U.S. and international governmental and non-governmental sources.
