Origins of Mexican Migrants to the United States by Mexican State of Residence, Number, and Share, 2004-2015
This interactive map shows the trend in Mexican migration to the United States by state of residence for each year between 2004 and 2015. Based on a survey of migration flows along Mexico’s northern border region, the map displays the annual number and share of Mexican migrants who are travelling to the United States and who do not have return itinerary. Darker colors represent higher shares of emigration from those states. Select (or deselect) Mexican state to view a line chart that shows the migration flows to the United States from the selected state over time.
The data are based on the Survey of Migration on the Northern Border of Mexico (Encuesta de Migración en la Frontera Norte de México, or EMIF North). EMIF North is an annual sample survey of migration flows along Mexico's northern border region conducted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), Secretariat of Labor and Social Welfare (STPS), the National Migration Institute (INM), the National Population Council (CONAPO), and the College of the Northern Border (COLEF) in Tijuana. The category "migrants headed toward the United States" is restricted to those migrants who are traveling to the United States, are ages 15 and older, were born and resided in Mexico, and do not have a return itinerary. The available data do not include Mexicans entering the United States by air.
