Alexis Cherewka

Alexis Cherewka is a research consultant and former intern at MPI’s National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy. She is also a PhD candidate at Pennsylvania State University in lifelong learning and adult education, and comparative and international education. Her research focuses on issues of equity, accountability, and instruction in adult literacy and language education policy.

Ms. Cherewka holds a master’s degree in applied linguistics and a TESOL certification from the University of Pittsburgh, and she has taught English for speakers of other languages in higher education and adult education contexts in Burkina Faso, Germany, and the United States.

U.S. adult education systems have undergone significant changes, including to programs supporting immigrant integration. The creation of the Integrated English Literacy and Civics Education (IELCE) program has sparked the development of innovative initiatives, but also raised concerns about their accessibility and ability to meet immigrant adults’ diverse learning goals and needs.
