Anna Boucher

Anna Boucher is an Associate Professor at the University of Sydney, where she does research on immigration. From 2017 to 2021, she holds an Australian Research Council grant and a University of Sydney SOAR Fellowship to investigate violations of migrant workers’ rights in Australia, Canada, England, and California. She is also a Research Lead of the Sydney Policy Lab at the University of Sydney.

Dr. Boucher holds degrees in law and political science. Prior to coming to Sydney University, she was an Australian Commonwealth Scholar and Bucerius Scholar in Migration Studies at the London School of Economics.

The Evolution of the Australian System for Selecting Economic Immigrants

Since the mid-1990s, Australia has moved away from a focus on family reunification to place greater emphasis on workers coming via temporary and permanent channels. The evolution of the country's points-based model for selecting economic migrants and move to a predominately employer-driven system offer lessons for other countries that seek to develop a tailored and targeted immigration selection system.
