Antonio Pietropolli

Antonio Pietropolli completed a one-year internship at MPI Europe, where he co-authored this report. He subsequently joined the Mission of Canada to the European Union as a Migration Policy Analyst, where he supports Canada-EU engagement in the areas of resettlement, innovative approaches to integration policy, and economic migration.

Mr. Pietropolli holds an interdisciplinary master’s degree in local development from the University of Padua, Italy. During his academic education, he also spent extensive study and internship periods abroad in Belgium, Poland, and France, and worked as an academic tutor for refugees in Italy. He completed his bachelor’s degree in international relations and human rights protection in Padua.

Building Welcome from the Ground up: European Small and Rural Communities Engaging in Refugee Resettlement

Small towns and rural areas within Europe have become more active in receiving resettled refugees in recent years. How is resettlement to these communities different compared to urban areas? And what can be done to make good on the promise of “rural welcoming”? This report explores these questions, drawing on interviews with resettled refugees and receiving-community members in Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
