Ben Gidley

Ben Gidley is a Senior Researcher at the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Centre on Migration, Policy, and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford, where he leads a research cluster on Urban Change and Settlement. 

Dr. Gidley recently led the UK teams for several research projects on local and regional authority role in migrant integration and on neighbourhood-level integration dynamics. These include Integration and Citizenship in the UK (on Britain’s new citizens), AMICALL (on local leadership and communication on integration), Concordia Discors (on intergroup relations in neighbourhoods), and EU-MIA (the European Migrant Integration Academy). His recent publications include Integration, Disadvantage and Extremism (co-editor) and Residential Integration: Towards a Sending Country Perspective (co-author).

He has a PhD in sociology from the University of London.

This report explores the accelerating trend in the United Kingdom of mainstreaming of immigrant integration, in which policymakers seek to reach people with a migration background through needs-based social programming and policies that also target the general population. The report has particular focus on policies and programs used in London and Glasgow.
