Herbert Brücker

Herbert Brücker is Director of the Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research and Full Professor of Economics at Humboldt University Berlin as well as Head of the Department for Migration and International Labor Studies at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the research institute of the Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg. From 1988 to 2005, Dr. Brücker held research positions at the University of Frankfurt, the German Development Institute, and the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin. He was Full Professor of Economics at the University of Bamberg from 2008 to 2018 and Visiting Professor at the Aarhus School of Business from 2004 to 2005.

Dr. Brücker’s research interests include international migration, refugee migration, the integration of immigrants, and European integration. He has published more than 200 articles and monographs, including in journals such as Review of Economic Studies, European Economic Review, Economic Policy, and the Scandinavian Journal of Economics. He holds a degree in sociology and a doctorate in economics, both from the University of Frankfurt. In 2005, he received his habilitation in economics from the University of Technology in Berlin.

As the top destination in Europe for asylum seekers in recent years, Germany has rolled out a number of integration policy changes. Based on an early look at how newcomers’ integration is progressing, the report finds the policies have had ambiguous implications. The report also provides insights into the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the asylum seeker and refugee population.
