Nadja Dumann

Dr. Nadja Dumann is a Researcher at the Research Centre on Migration, Integration, and Asylum within the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), where she coauthored an evaluation of Germany’s Neustart im Team (New Start in a Team, or NesT) community sponsorship program.

Previously, she worked on EU and international migration issues with (inter-)governmental and nongovernmental organizations, notably with the European Commission in Brussels and the Canadian Embassy in Berlin. She also worked in international development cooperation in Ecuador and Colombia, and as a human rights observer in Guatemala.

Dr. Dumann holds a PhD in international relations, with a focus on the irregular migration of unaccompanied minors from Morocco to and within Europe, and a master’s degree in migration studies from the University of Kent’s Brussels School of International Studies. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in international studies.

By involving community members in welcoming refugee newcomers, community sponsorship programs hold the potential to open new protection pathways, better support refugee integration, and strengthen social cohesion. This MPI Europe report explores common challenges to the recruitment and retention of sponsors as well as strategies to address them, with a close look at experiences in Belgium, Germany, and Ireland.
