MPI Board of Trustees Add New Members with Distinguished Experience in Government, Private Sector & Beyond

WASHINGTON – The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) Board of Trustees recently voted to approve three new trustees to join the existing 11-member board, adding to its already deep diversity in expertise, political affiliation and experience.

Drawing from senior ranks in government, the private sector and the NGO community in the United States and internationally, the new trustees are:

  • Malcolm Brown, who recently retired as Canada’s Deputy Minister of Public Safety after a distinguished public service career that included senior postings at the Canada Border Services Agency; Citizenship and Immigration Canada (since renamed Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada); the ministries of International Development and Natural Resources; Human Resources and Skills Development Canada; and the Privy Council Office.

  • Elisa Massimino, a Harvard Kennedy School senior fellow who served for a decade as president and CEO of Human Rights First, one of the nation’s leading human-rights advocacy organizations. After joining Human Rights First as a staff attorney in 1991, she directed its Washington office from 1997 to 2008 before serving as president and CEO until mid-2018. She was recently named the Robert F. Drinan Chair in Human Rights at Georgetown University Law Center.

  • C. Stewart Verdery Jr., CEO of Monument Advocacy, a bicoastal public affairs firm, and former Assistant Secretary for Policy and Planning at the Department of Homeland Security’s Border and Transportation Security Directorate. Prior to joining the George W. Bush administration, he was general counsel to Senate Assistant Majority Leader Don Nickles, counsel to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch and counsel to Senate Committee on Rules and Administration Chairman John Warner.

“We welcome these new trustees to the board, and know that their distinguished records of accomplishment will prove invaluable as we work with MPI’s leadership to steer the institute to its next generation of success in an incredibly dynamic and challenging era of policy change,” said James W. Ziglar, who chairs the board and is former commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Said MPI President Andrew Selee: “We are delighted that Elisa, Malcolm and Stewart have agreed to join our board, bringing with them the insights gained over incredibly successful careers. Their experiences and professional backgrounds add further diversity to MPI’s board and will be important as we guide MPI in the years ahead.”
