MPI to Launch a National Center on Immigrant Integration Policy

WASHINGTON, DC -- At a time when one in eight US residents are immigrants and more than one in five children in the United States live in immigrant families, policymakers are giving little thought to the integration of these newcomers or to their community impacts. 

Recognizing the mismatch between immigration and integration policies in the United States , MPI is establishing a center that will provide research, policy design, leadership development, and technical assistance and training on integration issues to government officials and community leaders.

The launch event will mark the release of the Center’s first publication,Securing America’s Future: US Immigrant Integration Policy. Edited by Center Co-Director Michael Fix, the book sketches the contours of a national integration policy and includes a discussion of key integration issues raised by the current debate around proposals to legalize large numbers of unauthorized immigrants, including impact aid to state and local governments and financing health care for legalizing immigrants. 

The event will also include the unveiling of a cutting-edge data tool that will provide the most up-to-date demographic information available on immigrant populations in the 50 states and Washington, DC.
