MPI Launches 20th Anniversary Podcast Series, World of Migration, Examining the Evolution of the Migration Policy Field and Where It Goes Ahead

WASHINGTON — Twenty years since the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) was founded, much has changed in the world of migration and integration policy. MPI’s founding generation has witnessed the evolving policy landscape from up close—from the sharp turn towards a national security lens after 9/11, to record humanitarian displacement around the world, rising polarization in immigrant-receiving societies and the advent of innovative integration programs.

As MPI celebrates its 20th anniversary, what can be learned from those who have been at the forefront of evidence-based migration policy research and analysis for more than two decades? What broad trends have they seen and what interesting developments and challenges lie ahead? And, drawing from long professional careers, what knowledge do they have to share with emerging migration scholars?

These are some of the questions that our 20th anniversary podcast series, World of Migration, seeks to address. Beginning with the podcast’s launch today, each episode will feature a leader from MPI’s founder generation or current leadership in conversation with a colleague.

The first two episodes in the series are out, with more coming each week:

• Making Migration Policy in an Ever-More Complex World, in which MPI co-founder and Distinguished Transatlantic Fellow Demetrios G. Papademetriou and Natalia Banulescu-Bogdan, associate director of MPI’s International Program, discuss a range of topics, including the challenge of advancing smart policy ideas in the face of growing politicization and misinformation.
   
• The Challenges of Humanitarian Protection in the 21st Century, in which MPI co-founder and Senior Fellow Kathleen Newland and Senior Policy Analyst Susan Fratzke discuss the changing and challenging landscape around humanitarian protection, as well as innovations in the refugee resettlement and asylum spaces.
